Never had I ever taken time off from work without a plan. I’m not the kind of girl that likes to lounge around in my pajamas all day watching TV and eating chocolate. I like to work – I like to be active and constantly on the move because I get easily bored when I’m just staring at four walls. So the idea of taking PTO just because..well that was basically unheard of in my book.
The main reason I had never tried a staycation before was because it seemed like a waste. I always thought to myself, “If I’m not going on vacation, what’s the point of not working? Everyone else will be at work and I won’t know what to do with myself.” I also wanted to save those precious vacation days for a big trip just in case I happened to plan something that year. This philosophy is how people make themselves crazy.
We all need a BREAK! Work is stressful, life is stressful – sometimes you just need to take a day off and enjoy doing something you love instead of trying to cram every possible fun activity into a weekend until you’re completely exhausted come Sunday night and can’t bear the idea of going to work in the morning because you never took a second to just breathe.
This year I finally managed to let myself have a day. My birthday happened to fall on a Friday and I decided to take the day off with absolutely no plans in mind. I have to be honest..I was a little stressed out (how ridiculous!) about what I was going to do all day since everyone would be at work and it was just going to be me and my apartment to keep me company. However, this was one of the greatest days I had all year!
I bet you’re wondering what I did all day. I made myself breakfast in bed – gluten free, double chocolate, chocolate chip pancakes. I managed to hit the gym in the morning for an AM Zumba class that I had always wanted to attend but never could because it was during the week. I came home and took an absurdly long, hot shower. I let my hair air dry which is never possible because it takes FOR-EV-ER. I went to the nail salon for a manicure and actually let myself enjoy it since I wasn’t trying to fit it in on my lunch hour or right before a fitness class at the gym. I took myself shopping – not for anything in particular, just to see if I found anything I liked. This was the first time in a while I loved everything that I tried on and I think it was because I was just in a great mood from actually allowing myself to relax.
Everyone should try this once in a while. It’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of life, but it’s so important to take a step away from it to give yourself a much needed, well-deserved break. I took off this whole week for the holidays and I hope to use a few of these days to give myself some time to do the things I love. If you’re at a complete loss of what to do – try something new! I will hopefully be working on my photography skills to keep improving so I can give you more shots like the ones you see in this post! Here’s a few suggestions if you have absolutely no clue how to relax:
1. Read a new book
2. Take a really long walk along a route you don’t frequent
3. Try a new recipe (like my two ingredient cookies!)
4. Try to improve on a hobby you already love
5. Visit a local museum you never looked twice at before
6. Take a long drive without your GPS
7. Visit the local coffee shop and read the newspaper
8. Take yourself to a movie
9. Try a gym class you’ve never been to before
10. Take a nice bath with the works – candles, magazine, and your favorite music
What will you be doing over the long weekend?
