I just had to write a post about this because I am super excited to have finally discovered a nut butter alternative: hello SunButter! A nut-allergy-girl’s dream, SunButter is made from sunflower seeds and is completely, 100%, NUT FREE. If only they started making this stuff ages ago my childhood could have been so different…then again I wouldn’t have had the luxury of being tormented by evil children with their peanut butter sandwiches at the lunch table as I would have had to sit in a peanut free zone with all of the other cool kids so let’s call that a win.

I originally discovered SunButter through Sun Cups, the holy grail of nut free Reese’s Pieces. My non-allergic boyfriend tested them out for me to confirm that, yes, they do in fact basically taste the same so I’m not really missing out on anything. I have never actually tasted peanut butter so the difference would mean nothing to me regardless but I still needed to know how legit they were. From there, I knew I had to get my hands on this stuff in raw form so that I could make ALL THE THINGS that I previously couldn’t thanks to their nut butter requirements.

Enter my beloved SunButter. This brand is amazing because they are totally dedicated to ensuring their product is safe for people like me. Their ‘Allergy Promise’ even says “We know that living with a food allergy can be tricky, so we make SunButter simple: Safe and Delicious, Every Time—We Promise.” WHAT! I’m in luuurrrve. Not only are they nut-friendly, this product is completely free of the Top 8 food allergens: Peanuts, Tree Nuts, Milk, Wheat, Eggs, Fish, Shellfish, and Soy. You’re welcome.

SunButter4So I made all the things. My first nut-free SunButter & jelly sandwich (oh THIS is why people love peanut butter & jelly sandwiches so much), smoothies with SunButter added for thickness and protein, cucumbers & SunButter as a snack…the list goes on. I’ve lost count of how many jars of this stuff I’ve gone through at this point. But the one that has stuck the most is my new favorite breakfast. Check out the recipe below and enjoy!

SunButter Oatmeal

1/2 cup rolled oats
1 cup water
1 small ripe banana, sliced
1 tablespoon dark cocoa chips
1 pinch salt
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1 tablespoon SunButter
1 tablespoon unsweetened coconut flakes
1 tablespoon chia seeds

  1. Combine the rolled oats, salt, cinnamon, and water in a saucepan and turn the heat on high. I like to add just a tad extra water when I cook this because they tend to cook really fast so you lose a bit of the water right off the bat.
  2. Bring the water to a boil and then immediately turn down to simmer. This is going to happen quickly since there isn’t much water in here so don’t go straighten your hair or watch football while you’re waiting for the boil to start.
  3. Stir the oats frequently until the water has completely cooked into them.
  4. Scoop the cooked oats into a bowl and top with banana, coconut flakes, cocoa chips, chia seeds, and SunButter.Screen Shot 2016-07-19 at 8.44.35 PM

…and new beginnings.

New Beginning1

You guys. It’s been a while.

I’ve been completely MIA for about a year now and I’m disappointed that it’s taken this long to get back into it. A lot of things have transpired this year and it’s been fairly difficult to keep the blog going throughout all of it. That said, I feel like I’m finally back on track with things and have been dying to get back on here and share with you.

A little background…when I first moved out to LA I started having some issues with my eyes. I’ve worn contacts for about 13 years and have never had a problem with them. All of a sudden my eyes were dry, itchy, red, and puffy. I chalked it up to the stress of moving, the new dry climate I was residing in, the fact that I now had central air, allergies…literally anything to avoid facing what was actually happening.

…new hair.

blog16New city, new hair. The last time my hair was short was in my freshman year of college…yikes. I’ve been growing it ever since and never thought I would cut it off again. Pre-cut it was falling around my waist. Yeah, THAT long. Let me start by saying that this was not an un-premeditated decision. I have been debating chopping my hair off for months – since sometime last summer actually.

Don’t. Judge. There’s a few reasons why I never tried sushi before, the main one being that I am allergic to nuts and I’ve always been pretty weary of Asian foods. This experience only goes to prove that (for my fellow food allergic people) it’s important to ASK about eating something rather than assuming you can or can’t have it. I struggle with this because I tend to get embarrassed of my allergies – but struggle no more! Sushi has officially entered my life.

…moving to a new state.

This post is long overdue. I have been in the midst of a serious life change for the past 2 months and it has been a complete whirlwind! In November I found out that my boyfriend received an offer to re-locate for a job. This wasn’t completely out of the blue – he had always shared with me that he hoped to return to LA when the right opportunity came along. We just had no idea it would come so soon. I’m moving to a new state!! (I suppose I should say moved…I got here last week).

…real estate class.

real estate class

I never imagined I would try taking a real estate class. I went to school for communications and had a fairly rough idea of what I would eventually do with that degree. Real estate was not on the list. But in working full time and making a semi-decent paycheck no money doing it, I knew I needed to supplement my income with something.

…a staycation.

Never had I ever taken time off from work without a plan. I’m not the kind of girl that likes to lounge around in my pajamas all day watching TV and eating chocolate. I like to work – I like to be active and constantly on the move because I get easily bored when I’m just staring at four walls. So the idea of taking PTO just because..well that was basically unheard of in my book.

…joining JustFab.

Life is short, buy the shoes. This is usually, mostly, ALWAYS my motto. My roommates and my shoe racks will tell you that I have more shoes than I know what to do with. And yet, I will never have enough. I love shoes.

I recently discovered JustFab, a website filled with endless shoes that all cost about $39.95. $39.95, what a bargain! But what’s the catch? Well here’s how it works..

In honor of last Friday being National Pickle Day I figured I would share my pickle love story. Now, I know what you’re thinking..pickles? REALLY? Yes, up until last year I had profoundly sworn off these delicious, crunchy, snacks. But WHY? I’ve got no real explanation on this one. Maybe I just thought that cucumbers are so wonderful as is – why change them??

…moving out.

3227_Editv2My plan was never to move to Stamford. I grew up in a small town we fondly refer to as “the farm.” There were 2 stoplights, 1 school that encompassed 3 towns worth of kids, and no Starbucks in sight.

I went to an in-state school about 40 minutes from home so I was always pretty close by. After graduating from college I struggled to find my first “real” job. I was substitute teaching at my old middle and high schools just so that I was doing something and was constantly applying to jobs. After a year and a half of searching, I finally received an offer to start a new job…in Stamford.
